This qualitative case study explored how some Iraqi English language teachers respond to and negotiate these factors. It examined how these Iraqi English language teachers construct, shape and re-shape their identities within the religious, cultural, social, and political context of Iraq. Two groups of teachers participated in this study: Ten Iraqi English teachers who are a current secondary school English language teachers and living in Iraq and ten Australian TESOL trained Iraqi teachers who were intending to return to Iraq. Data were collected in Iraq and Australia in two stages: focus group discussions and semi structured interviews.
