Shareholder Protection Law in Malaysia: Its Character, Evolution and Effectiveness CHENVIVIEN JEAN HUI 2018 Malaysian companies have often been perceived as attractive investments, in part due to shareholder protection law modelled on international best practices. The thesis measures the comparative international strength of legal protections for shareholders of Malaysian companies. It analyses the effectiveness of the law in safeguarding shareholders from expropriation of corporate assets and investigates the manner in which specific features of the Malaysian context affect the operation of shareholder protection mechanisms. The research considers the way in which historical, sociocultural, economic and political influences have collectively shaped Malaysian shareholder protection law and its effectiveness in safeguarding shareholder interests.
