Tsai, Tze Kih The effect of temperature profile and differential rotation on horizontal convection Thermal convection occurs when cold dense fluid overlies lighter warmer fluid. Horizontal convection is a class of convection where heating and cooling occur along a single horizontal level. This is a common idealised model to gain fundamental insight into deep ocean circulation. This thesis explored numerically the dynamics and stability of horizontal convection under the influence of different temperature profiles. In addition, the effect of rotation and surface wind stresses on the stability of horizontal convection were studied using linear stability analysis.
