Noise pollution from aircraft presents a persistent social and medical problem, motivating efforts to reduce the noise at the source; however, without a complete understanding of the mechanisms underlying the individual sources of aircraft noise, mitigating the noise remains a challenging task for engineers. Consequently, much of the research into aircraft noise is directed at understanding the mechanisms of noise production, and how they can be modelled. In this thesis, experimental and numerical jet data are examined to facilitate the development of design-level noise models suitable for engineering applications.
