Stephen surveyed chemistry students, academics and employers asking them how they defined critical thinking. He used this information to assist him in developing and validating a chemistry critical thinking test. This test aimed to be administered to undergraduate chemistry students at any stage of their study in order to inform the practice of higher education chemistry teachers. He has generated a body of evidence showing the test is valid and reliable, and that it offers the chemistry education community a valuable research and education tool with respect to the development of undergraduate chemistry students’ critical thinking skills.
