Brain and spinal cord injuries can pose significant threats to a person's sense of self, as well as mood and wellbeing. Little is currently understood about how self-concept, mood and wellbeing change in the early stages after injury when individuals receive inpatient care. This thesis presents the results of a series of studies looking at changes in self-concept, wellbeing and distress in people who completed a six-week music therapy intervention, as well as those who received inpatient care but did not complete the intervention. The findings of this project will help those with brain or spinal injuries to maximise recovery.
