Intermarriage between partners of different religious identification is an important indicator of the extent of cultural maintenance. An analysis of the 1996 Census shows that religious intermix is significant and growing amongst Australia’s major Catholic and Protestant faiths. The once strong divisions between Catholics and Protestants are fading. However, amongst minor religions, intermix is low. It is particularly low amongst Jews, Moslems, Hindus and Greek Orthodox adherents. Copyright. Monash University and the author/s
