The thesis focuses on the development of new and safe therapeutic agents against leukemia. A new class of highly potent compounds selectively inhibiting growth of leukemic cells, without any observable harm to normal cells, was discovered. Initially, a series of the compounds was prepared and tested to build a structure-activity relationship model. This model was used to design molecules with a greater antileukemic potential. These compounds were prepared and explored. Being two orders more potent in the inhibition of leukemic cell growth that modern chemotherapeutic medicines, these compounds demonstrated a promising profile for the further development as future therapeutic agents.
