We use observations of galaxies to test if the underlying structure of the Universe drives their evolution. After defining the cosmic web in the nearby Universe, we measure the emission from the stars and gas contained in the galaxies. We find that galaxies in the cosmic web contain additional gas than other galaxies and an external mechanism is required to trigger the gas to collapse and form stars. These findings should be considered when explaining the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time.
