Medical imaging plays an important role in early detection and treatment of prostate cancer. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are two commonly used medical imaging technologies. Recent advances in technologies such as augmented reality (AR) have given rise to the idea of integrating medical images of anatomy, based on a computerised multi-modal image fusion, for use during clinical procedures. The goal of this study is to provide the necessary techniques for performing reliable MRI-TRUS fusion. Multimodal image fusion in this fashion would improve the clinical efficacy of image-based guidance for prostate cancer interventions.
