Victorian Brown Coal Char Generation and Reactivity for Advanced Utilisation Technologies

thesis
posted on 2017-09-13, 23:47 authored by ANTHONY WILLIAM DE GIROLAMO
Brown coal is an abundant and low-cost resource; however, it is currently almost exclusively used for power generation. This thesis aims to investigate a process (pyrolysis) of upgrading brown coal and creating a char product that could be utilised in applications such as pulverised coal injection (PCI) in a blast furnace for iron generation. The mechanism of pyrolysis of a brown coal briquette was elucidated, and through char product analysis and combustion experiments, the suitability of Victorian brown coal char to the PCI process by blending with the currently used PCI coal or as a complete replacement was confirmed.
